Should I Hire a General Contractor?

Building your cabin or home is a very rewarding project, the years of enjoyment ahead are well worth the work over the next few months.

If you choose Riverside Cabins to build and set your structure, many of the responsibilities of finding and working with sub-contractors are handled by us.

There are still several on-site jobs that you will need to manage; excavator, foundation mason, septic, well, power company, electrician, plumber, and deal with the county or city regarding permits and inspections.

These site jobs and sub-contractors can be handled in two ways:

  1. You as the homeowner can manage everything
  2. You can hire a local general contractor to oversee the job

If you feel comfortable taking on the project, and have the time, there is something about being knee deep in the entire process that just feels good, and you are able to make sure everything is being done to your standards and to how you want it. However, this is not for everyone.

If you are a considerable distance from the construction site and unable to be there to keep an eye on things, it may be advisable to hire a general contractor to oversee the project. It is also good to assess your time and personal skillsets before the project begins (this is where we listen to our spouse). Once the work has begun and you find out it was more than you expected it is much more difficult and expensive to find someone to jump in and take over in the middle.

It is also worth noting that if you will be getting a construction loan, the bank often requires that a general contractor oversee the project, so check with your bank on that one.
